Course objectives
1. Get to know fundamental concepts and terms of general linguistics and conception of language and speech of general linguistic point of view.
2. Get to know the conception of national language and his stratification.
3. Improve of the elementary knowledge of the fundamental linguistic disciplines.
4. Improve of the ability to define and to explain fundamental linguistic terms.
5. Get the presumption for the studying of the linguistic disciplines.
6.Present electronic resources and tools available for study of the Czech language.
The course takes into account the accreditation requirements for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
Learning outcomes
It is presupposed after ending the course students:
1. know linguistic terminology (language, speech, language situation, communication) and interdisciplinary terminology (sign, meaning, sense (of language utterance)and are able to explain relations between language and speech, among the terms language and sign, sense and meanging;
2. know languages in Europe and in the World and know position of Czech among other national languages in European Union, are able to explaine the language situation in Czech Republics and in other countries;
3. know linguistic handbooks linguistic journals, are able to use them in practice and to advice which handbook is suitable for solving some practical problems when writing text; know linguistic journals and specialisation of them and are able to create research of some thema of linguistic work;
4. are able to explain demands on the development and improvement of communicative competence of the pupils in the primary and secondary school;
5. know famous Czech and world-wide linguists.
Syllabus
  • 1. Language. Signs. Concept, language meaning, sense. Language and speech.
  • 2. Communication. Communicative situation and its elements. Communicative function. Speech and Speaking as a special action. Language, communication and communicative competence.
  • 3. Relevancy of the development of communicative competence for the education and edification.
  • 4. Natural languages, artificial languages. Dialects. Language situation and its types. Bilingual peoples. Di-glossy.
  • 5. Origin, source and development of the language. Classification of the language. Languages in Europe.
  • 6. Functions of the language. Language and meaning. Language and the society.
  • 7. Slavonic languages. Czech language among slavonic languages.
  • 8. National language and its stratification. Language policy. Cultivation of the language and of the speaking.
  • 9. Czech language - maternity language and foreign language. Communicative competence and the Framework educational programm.
  • 10. The structure of the language. Language levels and language elements (phoneme, morpheme, sentence, clause, text). Grammatical categories. Grammatical concepts.
  • 11. Linguistics and linguistic subjects. Linguistics and other sciences (semantics, pragmatics).
  • 12. Fundaments of linguistics development. Czech and worldwide linguists.

Teaching methods
- Lecture with graphical presentation;
- Discussion on some linguistics problems+
- Study hours of some theme (linguistic disciplines and linguistic terminology, languages of the world, slavonic languages). IN THE AUTUMN 2020 THE LECTURES ARE REALIZED ONLINE IN MS TEAMS.
Assessment methods
Students get the credit after he succesfull pass the writeen exam: it includes conclude and open-ended questions. Students get points for each answer. To pass the written exam students have to win 75 % of all points. The exam is written in the last week of the lectures in semester.
