Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce students to the possible ways of interpretation of a piece of poetry or drama (drawing upon the subject of Theory of literature I which is devoted to the poetics of prose). The subject shows students how to uncover the meaning of a literary text and its possible interpretations.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn through detailed analysis how to percieve an artistic text and how to evaluate it using different methodological approaches.

  • 1. Literary theory. Basic and recommended literature. 2. In search of interpretative language (Petr A. Bílek). 3. Structuralism and interpretation (Jan Mukařovský). 4. Interpretation of poetry (Zdeněk Kožmín). 5. Interpretation of poetry: semantics (Jan Zahradníček). 6. Drama as literature (Otakar Zich, Jiří Veltruský, Pavel Janoušek). 7. Semantic unity of dialogue. Dialogue and remarks. 8. Interpretation of czech drama. 9. Methods of theory of literature and interpretation. 10. Artistic movements and literature.

Teaching methods
Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of completion: oral examination, testing students´knowledge of assigned topics and of recommended literature. Students are given the list of topics and the list of recommended literature during the first tutorial. To pass the examination, students have to prepare a seminar paper on literary science terminology. Oral examination consists of three parts: 1) discussion over the studied literature 2) answering questions related to one of the topics 3) interpretation of a piece of poetry
