- Course objectives
- Upon completion of the course the students will be able to define, understand and apply the basic techniques and methodology of training elementary swimming and skating reflecting the learning content of the first to fifth grade of elementary school in compliance with relevant educational programmes. The students will understand and be able to show and have good command of the technique and methodology of teaching swimming disciplines in compliance with the curriculum for the first to fifth grade of elementary school with a possible follow-up study. The students will also have good command of the methodology of using specific swimming equipment. The students will be able to demonstrate the basic skating locomotion, understand and be able to show and have good command of the technique and methodology of teaching skating to compliance with the curriculum for the first to fifth grade of elementary school with a possible follow-up study.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will be able to understand, explain and use the knowledge of physical education in the area of swimming and skating. They will be able to use the knowledge and skills in the development of physical skills of younger school-aged children. They will be able to diagnose the technique of various physical skills and design exercises for improvement. They will be able to assist a tired swimmer and rescue a drowning person.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction, safety and theoretical analysis of basic skating, figure skating and ice hockey.
- 2. Methodology of basic skating for children, injury prevention.
- 3. Basic practical training with a focus on riding forwards, stopping, and riding in corners.
- 4. Basic practical training with a focus on riding backwards, crossover forwards, turns, and hops.
- 5. Games on the ice.
- 6. Basic swimming terms, principles of swimming hygiene and safety, preparatory exercises on dry land.
- 7. Preparatory exercises and games to become familiar with water and to practice orientation in water, floating, exhaling in water.
- 8. Falls and jumps into water.
- 9. Crawl – upper and lower limbs, swimming style combined with breathing.
- 10. Backstroke – upper and lower limbs, swimming style combined with breathing.
- 11. Breaststroke – upper and lower limbs, swimming style combined with breathing.
- 12. Assistance to a tired swimmer, rescuing a drowning person.

- Diagnostic assessment of methodological series and movement of upper and lower limbs in various swimming styles according to the educational programme for the first stage of elementary schools; demonstrations of swimming-based physical games for the development of basic swimming skills as per teacher’s instructions; set of five written descriptions of physical games with a focus on the development of basic swimming skills according to the curriculum for the first stage of elementary schools.
