- Course objectives
- The course enables foreign students to conduct teaching practice in the Czech Republic on a short term basis (e.g. one month). The course is divided into two blocks: 1) compulsory block of teaching practice and 2) compulsory-elective block of teaching practice. The aim of the complusory block of teaching practice is to develop professional competences of future teachers, to equip them with the knowledge of roles that the teacher plays at his/her work, and to make them aware of their own professional needs as educators. The emphasis is placed on educational and psychological aspects of the teaching practice, such as teacher’s self-efficacy, classroom management or disciplinary issues. The teaching practice is conducted at clinical schools that can be chosen by students from the database of clinical schools closely cooperating with the Departmnet of Education, PdF, MU. All offered schools provide teaching on a billingual bases or use CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method in their instruction. During the course, students are also provided opportunities for individual and / or group reflection on the experience gained in their own teaching practice, helping them enhance their reflective and self-reflective skills. Students are encouraged to link their practical teaching experience with their theoretical knowledge already gained in the courses of pedagogy and psychology as well as in the courses of their own specializations. The course management is inspired by the concept of reflective practice by Donald Schön. Within the compulsory-elective block of teaching practice, students learn more about the chosen area of educational reality. It will be chosen an institution that focuses either on: 1) free-time education of various backgrounds (practice at the selected leisure center); or 2) education of gifted pupils (practice in selected elementary schools or secondary schools); or 3) education of pupils with special needs (practice in selected elementary schools or secondary schools). The objective of this block is to carry out selected activities related to pedagogical work in the chosen institution (e.g. teaching, shadowing, consultation, observation, etc.). These activities are chosen based on an agreement with a mentor from the chosen institution.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students: - are able to design lesson plans, - are able to assess the level of acquired professional competencies, - are aware of their own professional needs as educators - gain understanding of critical incidents encountered in their teaching practice (e.g. class management, pupils’ motivation and solution of disciplinary issues), - are able to reflect on their teaching experience and use reflection as a tool for own professional self-development, - understand the real requirements associated with working with gifted pupils, pupils with special needs or with children within their free time.
