Course objectives
The main objective of the course is a detailled information about education of visually impaired. At the end of the course, students should understand and use data about: Categories of people with visual impairment, occurrence and causes, children with multiple handicap, deaf-blind children, peculiarities of psychical process by visually impaired, system of schools for visually impaired, counselling, special educational centres, technical aids, visual stimulation.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- Identify and summarize important signs of visual impairment according to the degree of visual impairment in individual age groups;
- Describe a counseling system for the visually impaired pupils, focusing on age specifics;
- describe the specifics of pupils with visual impairment - support, measures and special aids;
- understand the impact of visual impairment on the life of individuals with multiple disabilities;
- Describe communication options for deafblind individuals;
Syllabus
  • 1. The categorisation of people with visual impairment. The impact of visual impairment on an individual's personality (perception, thinking, attention, behavior, speech). Psychomotor development of a visually impaired child.
  • 2. Physiology of the vision process. Development of visual perception.
  • 3. Visual defects, types of visual defects and their influence on everyday life. Diagnostics of vision and visual functions.
  • 4. Early intervention - centers, clientele and support of early childhood vision.
  • 5. Child with visual impairment at pre-school age (pre-school education, child with disturbed binocular vision and reeducation of these defects)
  • 6. Child with visual impairment (VI) in school age. Specifics of the learning process - conditions and measures. Counseling during school attendance.
  • 7. Special aids for people with visual impairment and work with them. Use of computer technology in the education of pupils with visual impairment.
  • 8. The possibilities of education of pupils with visual impairment in the Czech Republic.
  • 9. Communication of persons with visual impairment - Braille and its writing. Access to information.
  • 10. Visual impairment as part of multiple disability. Basic information on deafblindness and communication options.
