- Course objectives
- In this seminar students are introduced to the essentials of the literary critical work. They will study works composed in the period of the 19th century. They will also learn about the ways of writing a seminar assignment.

- 1. Introduction to the study of Czech literature of the 19th century, classicism in literature, beginnings of Czech National Revival. 2. Václav Kliment Klicpera and the Czech theatre. 3. Karel Hynek Mácha and romantism in Czech literature. 4. Božena němcová. 5. Karel Havlíček Borovský. 6. Májovci group. Adolf Heyduk. 7. Jan Neruda. 8. Vítězslav Hálek. 9. Karolina Světlá. 10. Jakub Arbes. 11. Ruchovci group and lumírovci group. Josef Václav Sládek. 12. Jaroslav Vrchlický. 13. Julius Zeyer. 14. Svatopluk Čech. 15. Eliška Krásnohorská.

- Teaching methods
- Students will get an insight into basic trends and movements of Czech literature in the period in question, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities, significant for that particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- Type of course: Lecture. Type of completion: Examination. Examination requirements: written test in literature of the 19th century. The written test has 5 open questions, one of which involves mandatory reading. Students are also oblidged to hand in a seminar paper.
