Course objectives
The lecture introduces different aspects of German vocabulary and the main areas of research in lexicology. It focuses the features of lexical units, relationships and stylistic values of words. A contrast to the Czech language and the importance of acquired knowledge for teaching German as a foreign languages ​​are presented consistently throughout the lecture.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will be able to describe the subject of lexicology, the possibilities of vocabulary renewal and vocabulary movements and the possible relationships among lexical units. They can analyse words and explain the function and meaning of the most common German lexical affixes. Furthermore, they can describe and explain the most important systematic differences between German and Czech vocabulary and in the word formation. They also have theoretical knowledge in the stylistic stratification of German vocabulary, can recognise the stylistic value of some context bound lexical units and are able to explain the importance of this knowledge for teaching German as a foreign language.

  • Gender by word formation
  • Diminutives in Czech, German and English
  • German proper names, problematic fields in learning
  • Stylistic stratification of the German word stock: horizontal (regional) and vertical aspects

1) Written test: 50% of the final note; 70% of correct answers is needed to pass.
2) Oral examination: 50% of the final note; passed written test requiered.
