Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected personalities and concepts from the history of economic thinking with an emphasis on the normative aspect of economics.
Learning outcomes
The student demonstrates the knowledge of the parts of the history of economics and is able to present the basic milestones of the economic development. The student has knowledge of important economic figures, is able to describe their contribution and critically evaluate it against the background of the economic development of the society. Student demonstrates the knowledge of basic economic concepts, explains economic principles and applies them in practice, solving practical examples of defined problems.
Syllabus
  • 1. The beginnings of economic thinking - Plato, Aristotle, ancient Rome, Thomas Akvinski and scholastics, definition of economics as a science, positive and normative economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics. 2. Physiocrats, Merkantilism, Classical Political Economics (Lock, Hume, Petty, Cantillon) 3. Adam Smith, David Ricardo, J.B.Say, J.S.Mill 4. Utopian socialists, petty bourgeois socialism, Karl Marx 5. Thomas Malthus, Gossen's Laws 6. Marginalism (predecessors - Bernoulli, Bentham, Thunen), German Historical School 7. Economic cycle, producer behavior, costs (types, divisions) 8. Division of labor, absolute and comparative advantage, markets, imperfect market 9. Economic systems, unemployment, inflation 10. Supply and demand, inputs and outputs in the economy 11. International trade, stock exchange, economic organization 12. Economic scarcity, output limits, GDP and GNP
