Course objectives
The aim of the course is to include Russian literature in the context of world literature - directions, genres, their development and genology. The course introduces new Russian authors as well as authors of the so-called Second Wave, who are known especially as literary critics. Another aim of the course is to show different concepts of world literature, as well as the position of Russian literature in the world literature. The specific genres of Russian literature and the peculiarities and characteristics of the genres used in the Russian literature are specified. Students get acquainted with the key points of the development of Russian literature and their relation to the world literature.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students are familiar with the periodization of Russian literary development in the 20th century, they understand the specifics of various literary movements, they are able to relate particular writers and poets to 20th century literary movements, they are able to briefly characterize the specifics of the certain works of the selected authors, to utilize theoretical knowledge in interpretation of literary texts, to link knowledge of Russian history and realia with the development of Russian literature and its most prominent writers.

  • 1. Comparative literature. World Literature in synergy. 2. An overview of ancient literature and its influence on the oldest Russian literature. 3. Mythology and its influence on oral folk verb, Russian "byliny". 4. European renaissance and stop of Russian cultural development. 5. Romanticism in world literature. Russian romanticism. 6. Realism of the 19th century, the birth of the Russian novel and its influence on world literature. 7. Avant-garde tendencies in the 20th century, transition of Russian modernism to socialist realism. 8. Postmodernism in world and Russian literature (Kristeva, Pelevin, Sorokin, Ulickaja, Bykov, Akunin).
