- As a safe social environment, the Natural Garden enables students to gain their own experiences, improve their physical condition and manual skills, develop personal and social competences, and strengthen a positive attitude to life around us. Prerequisites for successful completion of the course are basic knowledges of biology and interest of the issue of natural gardens.

- Course objectives
- Learning outcomes of the course unit The course will make it possible to distinguish garden pedagogy from other scientific disciplines, to acquire and acquire basic knowledge of the importance of outdoor stay for physical, mental and social development of growing children and clients of social institutions. It introduces the potential of natural gardens as places for education and development of social, environmental and cognitively emotional competences. The course focuses on obtaining growing literacy in accordance with the principles of sustainable living during the autumn and winter months. Practical lessons take place in the natural school garden (Lipka Kamenná workplace).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student will be able to:
* characterize the school nature garden as an exemplary educational and socio-pedagogical environment and suggest its use for teaching and activating various target groups during the autumn and part of the winter months
* make phenological observations during the autumn and part of the winter months
* grow selected plants in flower beds and in alternative environments
* take care of houseplants in the interiors of the facility with regard to possible safety risks
* explain selected concepts and natural processes taking place in the natural garden and their use to increase biodiversity and nature conservation
* apply safety and hygiene regulations in activities such as tasting, handling of natural products or tools, etc. - Syllabus
- Course contents: These are practical exercises using activating teaching methods, which are supported by original worksheets.
- 1. Introduction to the subject, philosophy and principles of natural gardens, relation to the areas of social work and social pedagogy
- 2. The process of certification of natural gardens, history and development of natural gardens in the world and in the Czech Republic.
- 3. Specifics of individual types of gardens (school, nursery, community, permaculture, therapeutic…).
- 4. Target groups (children, youth, adults, clients of social facilities) and work with them in a natural garden, methods of activation and motivation.
- 5. Work in the natural garden, including methods of gentle harvesting, ecological processing of crops, storage. 5. Principle of self-sufficiency, tasting and sensory assessment of lesser known and traditional crops.
- 6. Soil in a natural garden - how to keep it healthy, alive and fertile.
- 7. Use of plants and animals for bioindication of soil condition.
- 8. Water in the natural garden - the possibility of retaining rainwater in the landscape and in the garden, the use of rainwater and economical watering.

- The student suggests, if possible, realizes and reflects professionally correct and age appropriate practical teaching with live plants in autumn, winter. Students will appreciate the importance of practical activities for the development of work habits and attitudes to work and care for the environment, suitably include these activities in the teaching of the subjects of the educational area Man and the World of Work, but they also complement teaching across other subjects. At the end of the course a colloquial discussion in the field aimed at verifying the knowledge and skills acquired during the semester. Presentation of seminar works.
