- Course objectives
- The goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of Russian historical transformations, focusing on the development of phonological, morphological and syntactic system. The attention will also be paid to the comparative aspects of Russian and Czech languages.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student will be able to identify important diachronic changes in the phonological system of Russian language; to analyze morphological phenomena and syntactic structures of contemporary Russian in diachronic perspective; to use the acquired knowledge to interpretation of grammatical phenomena from comparative Russian-Czech point of view.
- Syllabus
- 1. Object and basic concepts of this course. Development of Russian graphic system. Old Church Slavonic and its relation to Russian.
- 2. The most important characteristics of East Slavic language group. Historical phonology.
- 3. Disappearance of yers. Development of paired soft and hard consonants. History of phonems /ы, и/. Formation of akanye and ikanye.
- 4. Historical morphology. Nouns. General tendencies and regularities in declension of Old Russian nouns.
- 5. Adjectives. Differences in the use of short and full forms in Old Russian. Comparative forms.
- 6. Pronouns in Old Russian language.
- 7. Development of numerals. Etymology of basic numerals.
- 8. Verbs. Present, past and future tenses in Old Russian language. Category of tense and category of aspect.
- 9. Imperative and conditional. Participles and adverbial participles.
- 10. Uninflected parts of speech.
- 11. Historical syntax.
- 12. Work with authentic texts (digital versions) and corpora of Old Russian texts.
