- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students will be able to perform adequately the roles of discussion moderators. They will understand how to assist learners of a foreign language in online discussion forums. They will prove their theoretical knowledge practically by working with real students in an online language course.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to perform adequately the roles of discussion moderators.
They will be able to initiate discussion in online forums.
They will be able to provide constructive feedback on language to the forum participants.
They will be able to evaluate forum participants' posts numerically.
They will be able to use weaving effectively in online discussion.
They will be able to use summarizing effectively in online discussions.
They will be able to use various techniques to encourage social presence/community in the forums.
They will be able to change their voice and tone effectively in leading the online discussion forums.

- Teaching methods
- After being presented with theory and having discussions of this theory, students will try out the methods in practice by helping to moderate online learning discussions. The work will take place primarily online, with the possibility to have discussion in person to resolve issues.
- Assessment methods
- The practical part of the assessment involves active participation in moderating forums in the English Online course. Students are also required to reflect on their experience gained during the course. This involves reflections on the application of the theory presented. Students can gain points through the practical moderation of the forums (4 points a week) and through reflections (4 points a week). This leaves 100 total points. 80 points are required to pass the class.
