- Course objectives
- The course aims to introduce various issues of Czech music culture in its historical and contemporary context.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to understand basic regional specifics of Czech and Moravian folk music, become familiar with the names of prominent Czech composers, and gain an overview of the current Czech music scene.
- Syllabus
- Ancient roots of Czech music.
- The specifics of Czech and Moravian folk music (including its regional characteristics, traditional instruments and dances, etc.).
- The origin and meaning of the Czech national anthem.
- The main representatives of Czech artificial music (Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček).
- Czech popular music (development with the political background of Czechoslovakia).
- Contemporary Czech music institutions and festivals (focusing on the Prague, Brno and Ostrava cultural scene).
- International overlap of Czech music.
