Course objectives
The content of the seminar is designed in accordance with the requests of the Curriculum of Educational Programme for Pre-school Education, which requires the development of the communicative abilities of pupils which concentrates on the mastering of the speech, the ability to express oneself in common everyday situations, to master the skills which precede reading and writing. The subject objective is the orientation in questions of the language, its nature and function, layering linguistics and knowledge of Czech national language in its development and current stratification. The students recognize the language in its standard and codification; get acquainted with the codification and other scholarly literature which retains the language correctness, the stress is imposed on the stylistic refinement of the communication. When recognizing the phonetic aspects of the language, the study concentrates on the proper orthoepy in communication, on the division of coherent speech and on further phonetic and phonological phenomena in our communication. It is necessary to be orientated in Czech spelling rules.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able: 1. to understand and explain: general linguistic explications - language levels, standard, codification; 2. to distinguish the phonetics and phonology; 3. to understand the classification and pronunciation of the Czech phones, phonemes, variants of phonemes; 4. to explain the relation between the speech and the graphics. The students get fundamental knowledge of language, of the phonetics and phonology and of the orthography competence.
Syllabus
  • 1) The concept of the language culture. Oral and written language. 2) The basic expectations of the language culture, the requirements for cultivated communication on behalf of the speech culture. Formality and informality in social communication. 3) The usage, standard, codification; the term of language correctness and style refinement; the correctness in grammar, orthography and pronunciation. The most common language mistakes. The basic literature about the Czech language, the codification handbooks. 4) The phonetic structure of the language, phonetics and phonology. 5) The acoustic structure of the language; orthophony and orthoepy. 6) Speaking - physiology and analysis 7) Sounds - their articulation and classification; syllables. 8) The segmentation of coherent speech – the pause, intonation, cadence. 9) Sound means in coherent speech. 10) The formal pronunciation of vowel and consonant clusters in coherent speech. 11) The acoustic structure of the Czech language and its graphical building; orthography.

Teaching methods
The type of tuition: a seminar. Continuous written checks will be set during the study period: 1. Check of knowledge of the Czech rules of orthography 5 orthographical mistakes in 100 words are allowed. 2. Overview of Czech sounds phonetic transcription and classification of sounds in Czech. Five mistakes are allowed. 3. Passing of tests in IS MU required, 70 % right answers needed.
Assessment methods
The subject ends with an exam. To finish the subject there are compulsory continuous checks during the term. According to valid Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University there will be no re-sit terms for these continuous checks set. Dates of these checks will be announced via IS at the beginning of the term. Fulfilling of these continuous checks is compulsory for applying for the exam. Attendance at consultations is compulsory. The exam has a written form. Students must obtain at least 70 % right answers. EXAM TOPICS Linguistics, its stratification. Language and speech. Linguistic culture and language correctness. Czech national language and its departments. Phonetics and phonology. Definition, basic concepts. Phonetic transcription. Speech, physiology and analysis. Hearing of the speech. Sounds. Classification of Czech vowels and consonants, diphthongs. Syllable. Phonology. The ratio of phonetics and phonology. Basic phonological concepts. Ortophony and orthoepy. Sound means in coherent speech - word stress, sentence segment, pauses, speech rate. Intonation. Cadence and anti-cadence. Literary pronunciation of home words. Character. Quality and quantity of vowels. Voicing assimilation. The pronunciation of double consonants. Simplification of consonant clusters. Literary pronunciation of loan words. Literary pronunciation of the loan words. Recording of spoken utterance (graphemics). Orthography and its codification.
