Course objectives
Students get to know the basic methods of the RWCT program (Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking), which develop reading literacy, active and effective learning methods. They will learn to practically use the selected methods in the teaching of the Czech language at the 2nd grade of elementary school. Emphasis is placed on the use of methods in key thematic areas of language and style education, i.e. composition, morphology, spelling and curriculum about stylistic procedures and formations, as well as in selected issues of literary education. The presented teaching methods are in accordance with the requirements of the Framework Educational Program of the ZV.
Learning outcomes
The student will:
1. understand the concepts of alternative methods, methods of critical thinking;
2. practically use alternative methods;
3. use methods of critical thinking in teaching the Czech language, especially grammar and style at primary school.
Syllabus
  • 1st block: Reading literacy and its components. Basic conditions for the development of reading. RWCT program in the Czech Republic. Basic literature on reading literacy and critical thinking. A practical example of a selected method of critical thinking, e.g. I.N.S.E.R.T. 2nd block: Main features of critical thinking. Three-phase model of learning (evocation – awareness – reflection). Procedure for implementing a new method of critical thinking. Practical examples of methods of the evocation phase of teaching, e.g. key words, free writing, mind map. 3rd block: Creating a safe environment for the use of critical thinking methods when teaching the Czech language. Practical demonstrations of the methods of the awareness phase, e.g. we teach each other, discussion web, double diary. 4th block: Practical demonstrations of the methods of the reflection phase, e.g. five-leaf clover. Presentation of the lesson within the three-phase learning model using, for example, the Yes-No method or predictive reading. Principles of effective text selection for critical thinking methods.

Assessment methods
The subject is ended by a credit. Compulsory online attendance. Homework is required in the course of the term. They submit a portfolio that includes the application of methods based on chosen topics of Czech language grammatical or stylistic subject matter to get a credit. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
