Course objectives
By the end of this course, the students will be able to orientate in basic academic literature, textbook series, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and descriptions of individual levels of language skills; to use the newest methods and forms of teaching. Students will be able to analyze language phenomena and show their relations to other fields. Students will test their knowledge of topics and terminology not only while reading academic articles and discussing current issues in didactics, but also by doing a demo lesson.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to: to define the basic concepts necessary for specialized study of the Czech language with a focus on the teaching of the Czech language for adults; characterize those phenomena that are difficult to understand and understand for individuals with a different mother tongue while studying the Czech language; orientate in basic professional literature, textbook series and other aids; control the latest methods and use them in lessons. Practical knowledge will also be verified at the training lesson.

  • 1. Introduction to the field, teaching Czech as a foreign/second language to adults; 2. Language and sociocultural similarities and differences, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, representative descriptions of Czech as a foreign/second language; 3. Institutions and organizations for teaching Czech to adults; 4. Teaching Czech as a foreign/second language to adults; 5. Integration of students with a different mother tongue into the society; cultural framework, taboo, traditions; 6. Principles of didactics, textbook series, didactic tools; 9. Language analyses; 10. Teaching methods; 11.–12. Practical lesson and its principles, demo lessons.

Teaching methods
Seminar, students' active analytical work, discussion about current issues in the field.
Assessment methods
To successfully complete the course the students need to: 1. read the recommended literature; 2. do a written assignment on a given topic; 3. successful completion of the summative final test. A demo lesson showing teaching of given grammar issue of Czech as a foreign language to adults. Detailed requirements are available in each term in Study Materials of the course in the Information System MU, the folder Learning Materials.
