Course objectives
The seminar will present the development of France and its political life in the long 20th century in the context of European history and will bring its comparison with the history of the Czech lands. Emphasis is placed on understanding the French political identity and cultural reflections on the modern history of France.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student should be able to understand the main events of French history of the 20th century and their significance for the identity of contemporary France and be able to interpret them independently.
Syllabus
  • Course Contents: 1. The Third Republic and the Dreyfus affair (in the context of political tendencies in Europe at the turn of the century). 2. The formation of the French left in the first half of the 20th century. (Jean Jaurès and the European Workers' Movement, Léon Blum and the People's Front). 3. French far right (leagues, anti-Semitism, Vichy, National Front). 4. An attempt to redefine the republic 1944–1950 (political concepts, tripartism, the emergence of the Cold War, the idea of European integration). 5. Colonial wars and decolonization (Indochina, Algeria, consequences). 6. Charles de Gaulle and Gaullism (1958–1968). 7. Paris May 1968. 8. Thirty years of economic growth and oil shocks (1945–1981). 9. The unification of the left and its electoral victory (François Mitterrand, reforms, the fall of the Iron Curtain). 10. Terror as a political means (historical development to the present), French military policy.
