Course objectives
The course aims at understanding the milestones of Russian history and especially modern realities in a European context through up-to-date interpretation and clear explanation. Emphasis is placed on the context within the East Slavic area.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- interpret the major milestones in the history of Russia along the chronological axis from the earliest times of the Eastern Slavs, the emergence of the first state formation of Kievan Rus, the adoption of Christianity by the Rurik dynasty, through the period of feudal fragmentation and the raids of nomads, the epoch of the formation of the unified Muscovite state, the overthrow of the Tatar and Mongol "yoke" (invasion) to the first Russian tsars and the rise of the Romanovs;
- to view the historical events of these periods in the context of East Slavic culture;
- explain the influence of certain events on the development of the language and realities of Russia;
- identify and summarize important features of Russian realia.
