- Interest in the field of caring for individuals with hearing impairment and further study of this issue. Ability to read and understand professional texts in the field of surdopedics in Czech and English. Openness to exploring various perspectives offered by the field, to the issue of hearing impairment. Basic communication skills and a growth mindset for active participation in group discussions, presentations, and other engaging activities.

- Course objectives
- This introductory course serves as a foundational pillar for the study of Surdopedics, providing students with the essential context, terminology, and concepts necessary for their further studies. Throughout the course, students will become acquainted with the history of care for individuals with hearing impairment, basic principles of hearing and its disorders, methods of hearing assessment, and other important topics related to the field of Surdopedics. This course offers students a comprehensive overview of Surdopedics and prepares them for further study with solid foundations and understanding of key concepts and terminology in this area.
- Learning outcomes
- To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the field of Deaf Studies, including its history, terminology, and key concepts, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of this field. To analyze and interpret professional texts and literature related to Deaf Studies, both in Czech and in English, with the aim of gaining insights into current research, practices, and perspectives in this field. To develop a critical awareness of various perspectives and approaches within the field of Deaf Studies, particularly concerning the care and education of individuals with hearing impairment. To cultivate effective communication skills necessary for active participation in group discussions, presentations, and other interactive activities, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among students.
- Syllabus
- Introduction to Deaf Studies – defining fundamental terminologies: field, objectives, methods, interdisciplinary relations, and the subject matter of Deaf Studies. History of Care for Individuals with Hearing Impairment – pioneers of deaf education (16th – 17th centuries), development of institutions, establishments, and schools for the hearing impaired, historical evolution of teaching concepts, the Milan Congress, and care for individuals with hearing impairment in the Czech lands. Hearing – importance of hearing, ear structure, etiology of hearing impairment, factors negatively affecting the development of the auditory analyzer, classification of hearing impairments. Methods of Hearing Assessment – objective and subjective hearing tests, screening examinations, psychological peculiarities of the personality of individuals with hearing impairment. Speech, Voice, and Articulation of Individuals with Hearing Impairment – ontogenesis of speech, stages of speech development in individuals with hearing impairment, speech levels in terms of content, articulation, and grammar, modulation factors, characteristics of voice production in individuals with hearing impairment. Communication of Persons with Hearing Impairment – characteristics and significance of interpersonal communication, communication forms of persons with hearing impairment – overview and description. Law on communication systems for deaf and deafblind persons. Audio-oral communication systems and visual-motor communication systems. Hearing Prosthetics – individual hearing prosthetics, devices for individual logopedic care, compensatory aids, and their significance. Early Intervention – ensuring timely intervention: Early Intervention Program (EIP), Specialized Early Care (SEC), and forms of collaboration with families, healthcare, screening, orientation, and diagnostic examinations, situations of parents of children with hearing impairment. Education Options for Children, Pupils, and Students with Hearing Impairment – education system in the Czech Republic, legislation, support measures. Inclusive education of children, pupils, and students with hearing impairment in mainstream educational institutions. Organization of education for pupils with hearing impairment in schools according to § 16 paragraph 9 of the School Act – oral method, total communication, bilingual approach. Deaf Community – cultural definition of deafness – "Deaf", organizations of persons with hearing impairment, clubs for the deaf and hard of hearing, leisure activities, magazines focused on the issue of hearing impairment. Professional Employment of Persons with Hearing Impairment – career orientation possibilities, counseling, Silent World. Interpretation Services for Persons with Hearing Impairment – types of interpretation, ethical code of sign language interpreters. Deafblindness – concept and classification of deafblindness, etiology, education possibilities, organizations for individuals with deafblindness, characteristics of communication forms of persons with deafblindness.

- Seminar, Discussion, Group Activities: Organizing group activities such as group exercises, situation simulations, or workgroups where participants collaborate on specific tasks or projects. In-Depth Interview: Conducting an interactive interview with a guest expert or someone with direct experience in the field, providing deeper insights into the topic and answering participants' questions. Critical Text Analysis: Assigning excerpts from texts or articles for participants to read in advance, followed by discussion and critical analysis of the content, important ideas, and their application to real-life situations. Self-Experience Sharing: Asking participants to share their own experiences, stories, or examples related to the discussion topics, enriching the discussion and enabling the sharing of perspectives. These interactive methods facilitate the engagement and active participation of all participants, which is crucial for effective teaching in a large group setting.
