Prerequisites
Předpokladem pro zapsání tohoto předmětu na úrovni B2 (Evropského referenčního rámce jazyka), jsou zvládnuté základy anglického jazyka na úrovni B1. The intermediate student (Level B2) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
The student will learn about: 1) My Field of Study. a) Hot issues in the teacher's course of study. Current resources. b) Special texts and internet resources related to the field of study. E-learning. c) Scanning the text, skimming for main ideas, key words. Summarizing. Interpreting the data. Making a comment. Expressing opinion. d) Bachelor and Previewed Diploma Work Annotation and Summary 2) People and cultural differences. Globalization versus national identity. Texts 7, 14, 15 a) Reading comprehension. Critical thinking. Making a comment. Opinion exchange. Oral presentation
Syllabus
  • Week 1 Information about the course. Needs analysis. Week 2 – 3 My field of study. Hot issues, special texts and current resources related to the teacher's course of study. E-learning. Discussion, sharing information, mini-presentation. Formal style – revision (formal X informal style, passives, linking expressions, lexical differences). Bachelor work annotation and summary. W 3: Semestrial project assignment: Presentation of bachelor thesis. (Ideally 3 presentations in one class, 10 minutes each, handouts for fellow-students/power-point presentation, vocabulary pre-teaching, presenting on the basis of a brief outline/abstract) Week 4 – 7 Internet as a source of information about MU and possibilities of studies/scholarship abroad. Text 3. Scanning the text, selecting relevant information, organising ideas + note taking, mini-presentation in groups. Writing skills development – compulsory written assignments: motivation letter + personal project description. Week 8 – 9 Learning difficulties. Text 19. Unit 4 (Comm. ESP Practice). Reading strategies improvement: comprehension, scanning the text, skimming for main ideas, key words, summarizing. Discussion, making a comment, expressing opinion, problem solving. W 10 – 14 European Union: 'Wonderful future' or a new source of controversy and tension? Text 16 + up-to-date materials related to the topic. Arguing a point, making a comment, Euronews/BBC news.
