- Course objectives
- Bilingualism is a complex phenomenon which can be approached from different perspectives on various levels of abstraction. In the course of the seminar we will draw our attention to both individual and societal aspects of bilingualism. We will try to find an answer to questions like what bilingualism actually is, how it comes about, what are the consequences of being bilingual and in what ways can bilingualism be influenced or planed. We will get acquainted to some of the most commonly used terminology as dominant and balanced bilingualism, simultaneous and consecutive bilingualism, code-switching, diglossie or immersion and learn how to apply them to concrete cases of bilingualism. This seminar is in addition planed as an introductory class to academic work and therefore an appropriate setting for discussing and presenting term papers.
