Course objectives
Students will explore folk music of England, then and now. They will learn general features typical for folk music, and then will explore them on examples of contemporary folk music. They will also learn of the people linked to the history and revival of folk music, and of the position and role of folk music in the electronic age. A wide range of folk song lyrics will be dicussed (on themes such as love, death, drinking, trickery, war, etc.). Listening to the selected recordings is part of the course as well. In the end, students will be able to recognize traces of folk music within other contemporary sounds, will understand why people identify with certain types of music, and will hopefully enjoy listening to contemporary folk music and speaking about it.
