Course objectives
The aim of the course is an attainment of the basic orientation in Christian iconography.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic terms: iconography - iconology - critical iconology. A literature recommended.
  • 2. The figural depiction in Christian tradition - in comparison with other religious cultures. Word and image. Both the character of depiction: illusive and symbolic.
  • The main theme of Christian iconography: the depiction of the Holy Trinity and Its Persons and of the Virgin Mary. The iconography of the Old and New Testament.
  • Topic and form: historical changes of Christian iconography. Confessional differences.
  • 5. The iconography of saints.
