Course objectives
Having met the course requirements, students have an insight into the development of literature for children in terms of genres and topics which correspond with the target group of pre-school children. Students are able to critically evaluate the contemporary literary production for children, and its television and film versions. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Varieties of poetry written by children, song lyrics for children, its connection with nonsense and ludic line in folk poetry. 2. Detabooisation of certain issues in the contemporary Czech epic prose with a child protagonist, inspiration with world children´s literature (problematic issues of rasism, handicap, old age, illness and death in literature for very young learners). 3. Adaptation of folk tales and leggends for children, regionalism and children´s literature. 4. Contents and structure of magazines for pre-readers, the role of comics and cartoons as syncretic genres in the development of children´s interpretational activities at the pre-reading age. 5. The danger of triviality and kitsch in children´s literature, symptoms of triviality in texts for the youngest children. 6. Television programmes for children, extent to which film and book versions are related, analysis of selected programmes.

Type of course: consultations. Lectures are followed by students´independent reading.
