- This course intend to introduce students to Deaf Culture, Deaf education, Communication and contemporary issues in Africa and the United States. The course seek to create awareness and appreciation about issues on deafness in developing nations and in North America with the intention of broadening students’ knowledge about global issues in relation to deaf education. By the end of the semester, students should be able to: 1.Explain the roles of Gallaudet University in the training of global deaf leaders and deaf educators. 2.Describe the situation of deaf people in Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d”Ivoire, and Uganda. 3.Communicate using the American Sign Language (ASL) system. 4.Describe methods that can be used to assess sign language interpreters. 5.Differentiate between additive and subtractive forms of bilingual education.

- Course content: 1.Historical development of American Sign Language (ASL). 2.The roles of Gallaudet University in the education and training of deaf persons. 3.Communication system used by the deaf in Nigeria (SEE1; SEE2; Pidgen signed English; SSS; etc). 4.Introduction to bilingual education. 5.Overview of deaf education in Nigeria. 6.Available support services for the deaf in Nigeria (nature of governmental involvement). 7.Deaf education in selected African countries – Ghana, Cote dÍvoire, and Uganda. 8.Higher education and deaf students in Nigeria. 9.Teacher training programmes in the education of children with hearing impairment in Nigeria. 10.Deaf associations and clubs in Nigeria. 11.Practices in ASL.

- Instructions will be based on the following procedures: class discussions, practices in ASL, group and individual presentations.

- Class attendance (10%); class participation (10%); written assignment (20%); Seminar presentations (20%); Receptive sign language skill exam (20%); expressive/oral skill exam (20%).

- Godwin is a research student in the Department of Special Education, Masaryk University. A Fellow of the Ford Foundation and now an Erasmus Mundus exchange student, he is a lecturer in the Department of Special Education, University of Calabar, Nigeria. Godwin holds a B.Ed (Hons)degree in Special Education from University of Jos, Nigeria. He has a Masters in Deaf education from Gallaudet University, Washington DC. He has published some articles in learned journals and book chapters on bilingual education for deaf children. He is a member of some professional associations in Nigeria and the US.
