Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. identify representative species of cyanobacteria, algae and fungi, mainly from Czech Republic;
2. record these organisms;
3. survey the hydrobiological material;
4. work with determinated literature;
5. demonstrate organisms suitable for elementary school.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, literature, collection and preservation of algae, fungi and lichenes,collections of algae, protocol, drawing,descriptions. Specias suitable for elementary school. Observation of Cyanobacteria, occurrence, importance.
  • 2. Observation of Euglenophyta, Dinophyta, Heterokontophyta, Chrysophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 3. Observation of Fucophyceae, Tribophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 4. Determination of Bacillariophyceae. Main determination characters. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 5. Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta: Ulvophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance. Collection and preservation.
  • 6. Cladophorophyceae, Dasycladophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 7. Trentepohliophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 8. Charophyta: Charophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance.
  • 9. Zygnematophyceae. Occurrence, ecology, importance. Myxomycota (Lycogala epidendrum, Fuligo septica), Zygomycota. Cultivation of Mucor.
  • 10. Ascomycota. Occurrence, ecology, importance. Cultivation of Penicillium.
  • 11. Ascomycota. Occurrence, ecology, importance.Plantae with Uredinales, Puccinia graminis.

Teaching methods
Form of teaching: laboratory course. Methods of teaching: observation and drawing of cyanobacteria, algae, fungi and lichenes, explanation, instruction work with literature.
Assessment methods
1. Laboratory protocols. 2. Practical exam. 3. Attendance at course. Criterium for practical exam: 7 correctly determinate organisms from 10 organisms.
