Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at intermediate level. The basic study material is coursebook New English File Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to do the following things: Given a text written for the general public, students will be able to recognize the most important ideas and produce an oral summary. Given a range of general topics, students will be able to initiate, maintain, and end discourse naturally with effective turn-taking. Given a range of general topics, students will be able to write texts that demonstrate a good grasp of writing conventions, including grammatical correctness, and showing a wide range of vocabulary. Given a range of general topics, students will be able to employ a variety of structures and vocabulary, correct slips and errors that have led to misunderstandings, and use standard phrases to gain time and keep the turn. Given speech on a general topic in standard language even in a noisy environment, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main ideas. Given a general topic, students will be able to produce a clear, detailed description/presentation that demonstrates a logical chain of argument. Students will be able to distinguish and apply reading strategies for various types of texts and explain the value of the texts. When placed in a learning team, students will be able to encourage others, designate roles, and produce a result that fulfills given tasks. Students will be able to plan and carry out concrete and achievable long-term goals for self-improvement in the language. Students will be able to create and continuously update a record of personal language development. Given a gap in knowledge, students will be able to identify and use appropriate reference material and/or technological resources to fill the gap. Given a set of criteria, students will be able to critically evaluate their own language skills
Syllabus
  • The basic study material is the coursebook New English File INTERMEDIATE (Student's book and Workbook), see Literature below. The syllabus includes Units 6 and 7 the focus is on speaking and listening activities and development of students' vocabulary.
  • Week 1 - Introduction, Unit 6A (Reported speecch: statements, questions and commands / Shopping)
  • Week 2 - Unit 6B (Passive: be + past participle / Cinema)
  • Week 3 - Unit 6C (Relative clauses: defining and non-defining / What people do)
  • Week 4 - Unit 7A (Third conditional / Making adjectives and adverbs)
  • Week 5 - Unit 7B and 7C (Question tags and indirect questions, Phrasal verbs / Compound nouns / Television)

Assessment methods
Requirements: Maximum number of points per semester: 200 Pass mark: 140 (part of this sum is also the final written test, students must obtain at least 70% for this final test - if not: two resits of the final test are offered) Written test: 80 points Oral test: 60 points (students gather points that are added to the total sum of points, oral tests do not have resits) Placement test: 10 points Progress test: 10 points. Other types of continuous assessment: 40 points FURTHER INFORMATION ON POINTS: PROGRESS TEST: 100-95% 10 POINTS 94-85% 9 POINTS 84-75% 8 POINTS 74-70% 7 POINTS LESS THAN 70% 1 POINT
