- Course objectives
- The lectures introduce the most important grammatical forms of German. In addition, different problems of grammatical theory (i. e. how to define parts of speech or how to delimit inflection and derivation) are discussed. Apart from acquiring knowledge of the inventory of grammatical word forms in German, students should become aware of the way grammars are designed.
In order to acquire practical skills in producing the appropriate word forms, students are highly recommended to attend the exercises (cviceni z morfologie) offered in addition to the lectures.
At the end of the course, students should be able to define and explain the basic concepts of morphological analysis (e.g., affix, paradigm, word form etc.); they are able to identify the internal structure of inflected or derived words and to distinguish between both types (inflection vs. derivation); they become aware of the different possibilities of arranging German nouns and verbs into inflectional classes and are able to compare and evaluate the different approaches; they are able to name the grammatical categories relevant for different parts of speech. They notice the problems connected with postulating analytical forms and can explain these problems to others. In the field of practical language use, students should gain the necessary skills to produce the morphological forms of words belonging to the basic and extended basic vocabulary of German. - Syllabus
