Course objectives
The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the following topics: characteristics of intellectual disability; etiology, classification and characteristics of individual degrees of intellectual disability; dementia; Down syndrome; system of education of pupils with intellectual disabilities; prevention, inclusion and consulting.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- understand and explain the term intellectual disability;
- use the information about the system of education of pupils with intellectual disability;
- submit a reasoned decision about placement of pupils into the system of education and interpret own knowledge from area of Down syndrome and dementia.

  • 1. Education of individuals with intellectual disabilities as field of science. 2. Characteristics of intellectual disability. 3. Dementia. 4. Apparent intellectual disability. 5. Down syndrome. 6. Etiology of intellectual disability. 7. Classification of intellectual disability. 8. Characteristics of individual degrees of intellectual disability. 9. Legislation on the issue of school education of pupils with intellectual disabilities. 10. Counselling services for pupils with intellectual disabilities. 11. Pre-school education of children with intellectual disabilities. 12. Elementary education of pupils with intellectual disabilities. 13. Education of pupils with intellectual disabilities within professional preparation. 14. Further education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. 15. Social services facilities.

Teaching methods
Seminar with active participation of students.
Assessment methods
Annotation of professional publication, whose topic will concern education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Active participation in class (80 %). Written test (30 questions). For successful completion of this course is required 70 % correct answers.
