Course objectives
„Semiotic character of work of art“ means that work of art is an object and has specific meaning in the same time. Polarities of dimensions (materiál/symbolic) and its possible configurations are in the spotlight of the socio-art in this semester. Money are being investigated as an art analogy; they can embody values even spiritual ones. Through Exchange the money enables communication; some people buy and collect artworks; all people surround themselves with things. Consumption of junks and pathological collection of staff has an aesthetic dimension as well. Art of installation or assemblage may be consider as a current form of "vanitas". Then "apropriation art" shows ownership as social institution (which is not obvious) and theft as a counterpart of a gift. Historical avantgarde movements has opened a lot of topics; they have made most of the art/life ambivalence visible including relation to industry and commerce. Though they could not cancel separation between life and art they were able to uncover institutional nature of art (and knowledge). Today, creativity works with material of language, ideas or theories. Incidentally Bourriaud labels todays´artists as semionauts - adventurers going to sea of meanings.
