- Lower Secondary School Teacher Training in German Language (programme PdF, N-ZS) (4)
- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to one of the basic concepts of inflectional morphology, the paradigm. Students should gain insight in the reasons for presenting language material in the form of paradigms and get the opportunity to discuss alternative solutions. Attention will be drawn to certain anomalies in the construction of paradigms (e.g. syncretism or suppletion) while searching for the reasons these anomalies come about.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able
- to identify word forms occurring in texts according to their morphological properties and to assign them to the appropriate paradigm,
- to enumerate the paradigmatic forms of the basic lexical categories noun, verb and adjective,
- to recognize differences in the conception of the paradigm in different grammars and linguistic publications and to explain them to an interlocutor,
- to assess the methods of presentation used in foreign language text books of German to introduce morphological forms. - Syllabus
- - Introduction to basic concepts: Lexeme, Word Form, Grammatical Category, Paradigm;
- - Compiling paradigms from actual word forms in texts;
- - Underspecified paradigms;
- - Formal distinctions within paradigms and iconicity;
- - Morphosyntactic paradigms; syncretism;
- - Paradigm structure conditions;
- - Paradigm economy principle, identity of inflectional paradigms;
- - The use of paradigms in foreign language teaching.

- Teaching methods
- The work in class is based on compulsory reading of selected linguistic texts (written summaries may be required during the term), analysis of German language material (partly to be done at home) and the comparison of different grammars and text books of German in oral (short presentations) and written (homework) form.
- Assessment methods
- The course can be completed either by a “credit“ or by a “colloquium” (cf. Study and Examination Rules, section 18 and 19). In order to acquire a “credit”, students have to hand in the compulsory homework and to regularly attend class (no more than three absences). In order to acquire the “colloquium”, students in addition have to hand in a seminar paper comparing the use of paradigms in different grammars or text books.
