Course objectives
The aim of the lectures is to provide a short overview of the most important facts of German inflectional morphology. Students have the opportunity to revise their previous knowledge of German morphology and to put it on a more systematic basis. In addition, the lectures introduce the attendants to the common terminology of the field and to the basic approaches to morphology in linguistics. With respect to practical language use, the lectures deliver the knowledge required to produce the morphological forms of words belonging to the basic and extended basic vocabulary of German.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to
define and explain the basic concepts of morphological analysis (e.g., affix, paradigm, word form etc.);
they are able to identify the internal structure of inflected or derived words and to distinguish between both types (inflection vs. derivation);
they become aware of the different possibilities of arranging German nouns and verbs into inflectional classes and are able to compare and evaluate the different approaches;
they are able to name the grammatical categories relevant for different parts of speech.
