Course objectives
The topic of the seminars is the issue of the Czech literature during the years 1945 - 1968 (with the inner differentiation caused by events of years 1948 and 1956). Students will through seminar work (combining lectures, discussion and independent work in terms of essays and interpretations of selected works) acquire knowledge of literary movements, genres and trends of the postwar period of Czech literature.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to explain the development of literary movements and genres of the given period of Czech literature in terms of poetry, prose and drama. They will be able to interpret literary works, and defend and support their opinions using their knowledge of literary studies. Students will also deepen their knowledge of literary studies and their interpretative skill in order to communicate with a literary work more effectively.
Syllabus
  • 1. Reactions to the war in Czech poetry (creations of generation of Nezval and Halas, new groups of poets). 2. Reactions to the war in Czech prose (so-called first wave of prose with a war theme). 3. Schematism in Czech literature (proletarian poetry, proletarian novel) and attempts to overcome it. 4. Poetry of the second part of 1950’s (poetry of everyday life). 5. Poetry of 1960’s. 6. Lone pioneers of the 1960’s prose (Hrabal – Páral) 7. Socio-critical (so-called confrontational) prose in the 1960’s. 8. Second wave of prose with war theme in the 1960’s. 9. Historical novel in 1950’s and 60’s. 10. Existential drama. 11. Absurd drama. 12. Literary studies and criticism in the 1960’s.

Teaching methods
The individual topics are presented in chronological order, selected chapters are chosen in order to maintain the notion of continuity of the literary process in this period. Individual seminars will focus on more complex wholes (e.g. groupings of poets, works similar in themes or works of an outstanding personality of the period). Students will creatively use their knowledge gained both in contact classes and in their individual study of recommended literature which they will regualrly discuss with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: active participation (min. 80% attendance) and assigned tasks completed individually (text interpretations). The emphasis is put on student´s ability to evaluate a literary work, to compare it in the context of the current Czech and world literary production and to defend their views using precise terminology.
