- Course objectives
- The course is conceived as an accompanying course to “Scholarly Skills in German” (NJ_AA20). It offers students the opportunity to discuss drafts of the compulsory assignments in NJ_AA20 and to clarify questions regarding the writing of academic texts. In addition, exercises on language use in German academic texts are offered.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students should be able - to recognize formulations typical for German academic writing, - to correctly interpret text structure signals in academic texts and to use them, - to create a draft structure of an academic text, - to write coherently and consistently on a closely delimited scientific question, - to refer to source texts according to the usual conventions for citing.
- Syllabus
- - introduction to the characteristics and methods of scientific work, - comparison of scientific texts and everyday texts, - analysis of the content of a scientific text (research question, theses and hypotheses, reasoning, conclusions and outlook), - formal analysis of a scientific text (conventional formulations to identify the function of certain parts of the text, signals for text structure, referencing techniques, references to alternative views in the scholarly discussion, routine phrases for introducing evidence and counter-evidence), - linguistic peculiarities of the German academic language (passive, nominalizations, personal/impersonal style of writing), - common problems in writing scientific texts.
