Course objectives
In this class, students will develop their speaking and listening skills. Students will actively engage in discussions, expand their vocabulary, presentation skills and speaking skills and have an opportunity to use complex structures in order to express complex ideas. All four skills will be represented to various degrees. The students will be exposed to a number of various formats of speaking occasions, e.g. discussions, debates, team projects as well as individual presentations.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to actively participate in discussions covering various topics ; they will easily start and maintain a conversation; they will be able to ask questions related to the conversation; they will gain confidence in speaking.
Syllabus
  • The course will cover various areas of spoken discourse on a range of topics. Students are expected to come to attend classes, work in groups and be prepared to express their opinions on controversial matters.

Teaching methods
The methods used in teaching are mainly different types of discussion (pair, group, class), reading, listening and giving presentations. All these expect active home preparation.
Assessment methods
Attendence is required since it is impossible to make up a missed discussion. Regarding class contribution, students should participate positively in group and class discussions, and not only when called upon. Students are also required to give several brief presentations to the whole class. Throughout the semester students are ancouraged to think which activities and how they could be able to use or adapt for their own teaching.
