Basic understanding of the terminology of phonetics and phonology, morphology, word formation, syntax and stylistics is expected.

Course objectives
Students can explain the current interpretation of bilingualism (multilingualism) and differences in ways of speech acquisition and speech development of bilingual individuals. Students understand the specifics of bilingual families and societies.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: - explain the differences between different types of bilingualism (plurilingvism). - identify individual phases of language acquisition and understand their specifics. - distinguish the general patterns of speech acquisition from individual specifics. - understand the specifics of bilingual (plurilingual) families and societies.
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Definition of bilingualism; types of bilingualism; simultaneous and successive bilingualism. 3.-4. Speech acquisition, speech focused on a child; speech development of bilingual individuals; bilingualism and intelligence. 5.-6. Bilingual families; case studies describing bilingual individuals. 7. Bilingual and multilingual societies 8.-9. Monolingualism a bilingualism – similarities x differences; code switching and translating. 10.-12. Cultural identity, values and standards.

Lecture, students‘ active contribution is expected.
Assessment methods
Colloquial debate on one of the course topics; the prerequisite is a) a written research paper (on one of the selected subtopics of the topic of bilingualism theory) and b) a paper with presentation and its evaluation. Details will be specified at the beginning of the semester.
