Course objectives
The aim of the course is
(1) to provide students with an opportunity to continuous professional activities related to the field of study (studying professional literature, publishing and teaching activities, writing grant proposals, and participating at domestic and foreign conferences, workshops, summer schools or similar study and research stays), and
(2) to enculturate into a geographical and wider social science professional community through participation in lectures, workshops and other professional meetings organized by the Department of Geography, Masaryk University.
Learning outcomes
Gradually, the student encultures into the professional community through building knowledge, developing skills and gaining the experience needed to create and defend a PhD dissertation.
The student has broader knowledge and a general overview of geography and related natural and social sciences, including methodology.
Syllabus
  • Through repeated completion of this course, the student is expected, in consultation with the supervisor, to gradually fulfil the following responsibilities:
  • 1. Prescribed publishing activities (minimum requirements: 4 publications dedicated to Masaryk University, with at least 1 study published in a peer-reviewed journal indexed in the WoS or SCOPUS database and 1 study in a peer-reviewed journal; the remaining texts may take the form of books, book chapters, articles or conference proceedings). Publications indexed in the WOS and SCOPUS databases are clearly preferred.
  • 2. Fulfil the teaching or other pedagogical work duties at the university (according to the agreement with the supervisor and the head of the department - teaching with supervision, preparation of teaching, testing, presentations, syllabi, electronic learning aids, distance texts, assessments corrections, etc.) with a total volume of up to 150 hours.
  • 3. Actively participate in conferences in Czechia and abroad (at least 4 presentations at conferences are required, of which at least 2 at conferences in Czechia / Slovakia in the Czech language and at least 2 at conferences typically outside Czechia with a language of proceedings other than Czech.
  • 4. Participate as team members of research projects (eg specific research projects, GA CR, TA CR).
  • 5. Participate in lectures, workshops and other events organized within the studied study program, including related study preparation (eg study of professional books and journal articles, active presentations, etc.). Typically, these are the so-called geographical Wednesdays and also other workshops outside this format (eg lectures by foreign guests, faculty-wide conferences of doctoral students).

Colloquium, at the beginning and during the semester, the requirements and their fulfilment should be continuously consulted and specified with the supervisor.
