- Course objectives
- The seminar will offer a thematic and methodological insight into the field of garden therapy (CT). Students will gain an overview of the opportunities that garden therapy offers in social work and in the work of a social educator. They will get acquainted in more detail with the concept of Green Care and its importance for education and activation in 21. century. At the same time, students will be introduced to the possibility of integrating methods and procedures of ZT into education, upbringing and social services. They will acquire basic competencies associated with methodological approaches to various target groups. Emphasis will be placed on interactive teaching methods and methods that activate students to collaborate, as the seminars will provide space for model lessons that students will be able to experience as participants. Students will be familiar with the existing materials for the practice of CT, understand the goals and concept of CT, will be able to assess various sources of information about CT and critically reflect on them. They will get acquainted with the current legislative framework of joint education. Students are familiar with the current concept of development of natural gardens and their possibilities for therapeutic use, in the methods of activating clients and the method of communication and transfer of horticultural know-how to various clients. Students will get acquainted with the possibilities of involving clients in selected gardening activities or the use of garden space and natural materials grown here for sensory activation of clients. In the practical part, they will try not only activities for all five senses (with seeds, aromatic plants, sound elements, etc.) but also training in memory and orientation in time (garden as a calendar or astronomical clock).
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student will be able to:
• describe the goals and effects of ZT
• describe the specifics of individual target groups of ZT and evaluate their needs in the implementation of ZT in the field of social services
• explain the basic principles for the creation of therapeutic gardens with regard to the target group and the purpose of therapy
• be familiar with the trends of contemporary garden pedagogy and interactive methods
• characterize institutions and organizations that deal with the issue of CT
• work with the principles and methods of ZT not only in the environment of social services
• actively use supporting information and methodological materials
• apply ZT methods of sensory activation in the preparation of one's own teaching / lesson / workshop - Syllabus
- 1. Origin and development of ZT in the world and in our country. The concept of Green Care and the system of education in ZT, inspiration examples of good practice from the EU, use in the field of social services
- 2. Aims and effects of ZT, division according to target groups and according to the purpose of therapy.
- 3. Basic methods of sensory activation, increasing the comfort and attractiveness of staying in gardens.
- 4. Therapeutic garden as a natural classroom as a space for social involvement, communication and activation.
- 5. Suitable assortment of plants for ZT and dangerous plants. Soil as a therapeutic medium.
- 6. Possibilities of using rehabilitation, occupational therapy, art therapy, activation and relaxation potential of gardens.

- Block lessons in the form of seminar exercises requiring activity, involvement in prepared exercises and tasks and individual preparation. Deepening self-study of students leading to the presentation of their own socially oriented project.
