Course objectives
The students will be able to understand, explain and use the knowledge of physical education in the area of artistic gymnastics and athletics. They will be able to use the knowledge and skills in the development of physical skills of younger school-aged children. They will be able to provide assistance and protection during exercises.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will understand the theory of athletics and have the skills necessary for practical execution of the techniques reflecting the learning content of the first to fifth grade of elementary school in compliance with relevant educational programmes. Upon completion of the course the students will be able to use basic gymnastic elements aimed at preparatory, fitness, coordination and compensatory exercises to prepare the body for various types of exercises, and understand, show and have good command of gymnastic sports activities reflecting the learning content of the first to fifth grade of elementary school with a possible follow-up study.
Syllabus
  • 1 – 6 Extension of the battery of preparatory exercises and games for various athletic activities using the sets of athletic equipment of the Czech Athletic Federation (Athletics in schools project). Learning about the basic concepts relating to physical games and relevant equipment, basic rules and organizational guidelines for physical games. Safety of games. Physical games and preparatory exercises for the development of physical skills. Physical games involving manipulation with sports equipment, competitive, combat and creative physical games. Practical classification of physical games by various authors. Physical games for improving physical skills as part of various thematic units in relation to sports games. Development of a battery of physical games suitable for PE lessons in the first stage of elementary schools classified by grades and educational plans 7 – 12 Appropriate methodology of training gymnastic exercises using various equipment suitable for younger school-aged children. Emphasis is placed on learning the knowledge and skills concerning assistance and protection of students during exercises. Working with e-publications.

Verbal, demonstrative, and practical.
Assessment methods
Active participation in lessons. Diagnostic assessment of methodological series for athletic and game skills; demonstration of organization of athletics-based physical games on a given topic; set of five written descriptions of physical games with a focus on the development of athletic skills according to the educational programme for the first stage of elementary schools.Practical mastery of methodological series, assistance and protection during acrobatics, vault, balance beam, horizontal bar, climbing including practical demonstrations.
