Prerequisites
In the course a student acquires basic orientation in social work, social policy and social pathology. The lectures involve explanation of the mutual relations of three interrelated disciplines. Definition of social pedagogy in a framework of social work, and the theme of social pathologies is given into the context of the mechanisms of these disciplines, as a follow up with possible intervention and prevention. The priority is to affect the meaning, purpose and consequences of social policy and social work mechanisms on individuals as well as communities. The focus is also on the disability of the relationship of theory and practice with a specific overview of social policy measures (institutions, social benefits, services, counselling, etc.). The structure of the course outline creates the analysis of contemporary socio-political problems and the process of transformation of Czech society after 1989. The aim of the lectures is to provide students with a basic insight into the field of social pathology and selected social pathological phenomena that the teacher can encounter most often in his / her practice. Emphasis is placed on the interconnection of theory and practice, the students will get acquainted with the methods of social work and will deal with the application of social work methods into practice within social policy. The connection between the historical development of social work and the current trends in this area is important. In seminars the great themes of social work in the world and in our country will be discussed. With a focus on extreme and problematic life situation and interventions in the field of social work students will search connections between social work, social pedagogy, social pathology and social policy. Important is the relationship between social worker and client, rights and duty, ethical code, burnout syndrome, supervision, demands of social work. Part of the work is a professional review for social work.

Course objectives
At the end of the course the students are expected to be able to define basic concepts, to explain and define specific social pathological phenomena, to understand the conditions of their origins and at the same time they will be able to outline the possibilities of their solution and prevention. Students will understand the principles of primary prevention implementation and will be aware of the interdependence and interdependence of cooperation between schools, families and other institutions involved in solving problem situations of individuals or groups.
Learning outcomes
Key requirements students will meet:
 define social work, understand social work topics in the context of other disciplines, demonstrate knowledge about target groups and methods of social work
 orientate in the field of social pathologies, relationship between social pathology, social policy and social work
 demonstrate knowledge about the main concept of social policy in the Czech Republic taking into account current trends
 demonstrate knowledge about historical links between social policy, social work and social pathologies
 demonstrate knowledge of ethics in social work, basic knowledge of new social law and changes brought about by social work mechanism, knowledge of development and trends of social work
 demonstrate knowledge of methods of social work, possibilities of intervention and prevention in the context of social work in the context of social policy
At the end of the course the student may be able to orientate in the context of three disciplines, which are related in the context of history, system and methods.
Syllabus
  • 1. Social work as a scientific discipline, cooperation with other disciplines, philosophy of social work, religious sources of social work.
  • 2. Social pathology in society, search for possible causes of poverty and its impact on families and the environment.
  • 3. Social pathology (poverty, aggression, crime, divorce, unemployment, etc.), their distribution, characteristics. The notion of anomie in society.
  • 4. Basic concepts of social work, paradigms of social work, major topics of social work, insight into discipline, development of social work in the world (selected representatives) and in the Czech Republic (selected personalities).
  • 5. Social worker vs client, social worker code of ethics, relationship, values, target groups of social work, social work and social services, claims of social work, burnout syndrome.
  • 6. Selected methods of social work (work with family, field social work, community work, counseling, crisis intervention, publici and probation, streetwork etc.)
  • 7. Concept and subject of social policy. Its structure, substance and meaning. Social welfare (delimitation, approaches, nature). Basic principles, objectives and concepts of social policy. Functions and tools of social policy.
  • 8. Models of social policy and development perspectives. Typology and methodology of comparative studies. Social stratification. Problem, structure, theory of equality, recognition theory, theory of justice, research. Church social education.
  • 9. Social security. Evolution of social security schemes. EU social security criteria. International social security association. Social security act. Social assistance and social services. Mission, structure, subjects, financial resources, typology of social services. Social care benefits. Securing the poor and socially disintegrated. Hospice care.
  • 10. Employment policy. Specifics of the labor market, characteristics of unemployment and its consequences. Unemployment benefits. Globalization in the context of national states and multinational corporations. Health policy. Basis, health care system, health insurance. Disability. Age. Retirement age.
  • 11. Family policy. Changes in family form, family support systems, development, characteristics, transformation, demographic aspects. Social support of women during pregnancy and maternity. Housing policy. State functions, tools, transformation, support, reproduction of housing stock.
  • 12.Educational policy. Content, goals, principles, documents, transformations, financing and efficiency. Characteristics of school reforms in the context of social mobility. The process of social policy transformation in the Czech Republic. Problems and trends, visions. Social policy in selected European countries (Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, France, Italy).

Assessment methods
Writing an essay – analysis of the social network at the place of residence. Students will learn about social problems in their residence, elaborate the social network in the text (state and non-profit sector, organizations, federal activity, professional workplaces, activists, community schools, etc.).
At the same time, students choose the target group of social work that they consider most needful and finds out what services are directed to it in the given area. The social network will be in the range of ten or more pages and will cover the areas of social policy, social pathologies and social work
• Developing a model strategy for solving a specific social pathological phenomenon with a clear definition of the role of the social worker / social pedagogue in solving the selected problem and its cooperation with professional workplaces - defining the problem, possible strategies of the solution, the role of social pedagogue and other involved professional institutions again in the relation between social work , social policy and social pathologies.
