- Course objectives
- This course enhances the acquisition of linguistic knowledge and teaching competencies indispensable for the professional development of future teachers of English, in particular communication and interpersonal skills (viz Strategic Aim 1, Strategies 2030). The main goal is to extend students knowledge of English syntax. Based on the differences between the simple sentence, compound sentence, and complex sentence, students analyse different types of sentences and texts and thus acquire a deeper knowledge of the syntactic structure of the English language. When required, any more problematic areas from English syntax, such as modal verbs, complex condensation and different types of dependent clauses, can be included in the course syllabus.
- Learning outcomes
- This course will raise students’ awareness of similarities and differences between English and their mother tongue and thus enables them to identify potentially problematic areas for their future learners. The students are expected: 1. to analyze the structure of the English sentence, i.e. the simple, complex and compound sentence; 2. to understand the differences in the expression of a variety of syntactic relations of syntactic units on different hierarchical levels; 3. to be capable of applying two basic types of grammatical notation, i.e. tree diagrams and bracketing; 4. to understand the differences between different ways of expressing various syntactic relations in English and Czech and to be able to explain them while providing concrete examples.
