Course objectives
Students will learn and understand basic dialectological concepts, gain knowledge about the dialectal diversity of the Czech language and the tasks of contemporary Czech dialectology. During their own field research and in the processing of the dialectal material they learn the methods of dialectological work.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: 1. understand basic dialectological concepts; 2. distinguish dialectal areas and gain an overview of the dialectal diversity of the Czech language 3. understand the tasks of Czech dialektology.
Syllabus
  • Block 1: Definition of basic terms: traditional territorial dialect, interdialect, common speech, wave theory, linguistic geography, language atlas, language map. Dialectological research and methods of dialectological work. Dialectological transcription of dialect records. Block 2: Dialectal differentiation of the Czech language. Dialect groups, subgroups, types and marginal sections. Basic differential dialectal features of Czech and Moravian and their diachronic interpretation. Czech language atlas. Block 3: Czech dialects in the narrower sense, Central Moravian dialects: features, sound samples, developmental tendencies. Block 4: East Moravian and Silesian dialects: features, sound samples, developmental tendencies.

Teaching methods
Students' active analytical work in understanding the diversity of dialectal areas; students' active synthetic work in acquiring dialectal material and learning the methods of dialectological work. Face-to-face participation in online classes will be preferred.
Assessment methods
For successful completion of the course, the following is required: 1. active participation in the seminar; 2. submission/presentation of a seminar paper/resume on the assigned topic. Detailed requirements are published in each semester in which the seminar takes place in the Course Materials in the Learning Materials folder of the course.
