Course objectives
The lecture cycle introduces the students to the basic artistic currents, directions and personalities in the Russian literature of the 20th century. The basis is the understanding and the ability to interpret and critique the works of the most prominent authors of Russian poetry, poetry and drama of the period.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students are familiar with the periodization of Russian literary development in the 20th century, they understand the specifics of various literary movements, they are able to relate particular writers and poets to 20th century literary movements, they are able to briefly characterize the specifics of the certain works of the selected authors, to utilize theoretical knowledge in interpretation of literary texts, to link knowledge of Russian history and realia with the development of Russian literature and its most prominent writers.

  • 1. Introduction, periodization of Russian literature. Milestones.
  • 2. Silver Age Literature - Symbolism.
  • 3. Silver Age Literature - Acceptance.
  • 4. Silver Age Literature - Futurism, Immigration.
  • 5. Writers "Outside Literary Currents".
  • 6. Russian literature after 1917. Socialist realism and proletarian literature.
  • 7. Satire as a reflection of the socio-political development of post-revolutionary Russia.
  • 8. The theme of war and Gulag in Russian literature. So-called. village prose.
  • 9. Russian poetry in the second half of the 20th century.
  • 10. The first, the second and third wave of the Russian emigration.
  • 11. Literary processes at the end of the 20th century. Russian postmodernism. So-called returned literature

Teaching methods
1. A cycle of lectures and seminars.
2. As part of the seminars, students prepare projects dedicated to chosen writers and their work (the list of writers and works is published at the beginning of the semester). Projects are consulted with the teacher.
3. Study of electronic materials in IS MU.
