- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to understand the state of the art in the field of first and second language acquisition both in natural setting and in formal education.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, a student will be able to:
explain the approaches and theories of second language acquisition;
understand the implications of the theories for foreign language teaching;
understand factors influencing second language acquisition;
outline the relevance of the theories for their dissertation research. - Syllabus
- The course of Second language acquisition is a core component of the study programme. Students will be acquainted with individual hypotheses and theories of language acquisition and with the role of important factors that influence these processes. Topics: • Behaviorism and nativism. • Sociocultural and cognitive approaches to foreign language acquisition. • Constructivism, social interactionism, connectionism, information processing. • Models/hypothesis of multiple language acquisition (multipler Spracherwerb), implications for foreign language teaching. • Factors influencing the process of language acquisition.
