- Course objectives
- The course is designed as the introduction to children’s literature and its relationship with primary education. The aim of the course is:
1) to explore characteristic genres of children’s literature such as poetry, fairy tales, picture books, fantasy
2) to introduce some typical themes and conventions associated with children’s literature
3) to develop in students the ability to read children’s literature critically
4) to provide theoretical background for using children’s literature in the classroom
5) to stimulate students to become avid readers - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to read children’s literature critically, select books of various genres for equipping class library, and choose appropriate methods and activities for using children’s literature in the classroom.
- Syllabus
- Week 1: Introduction. Reading as calming down, reading routines.
- Week 2: The role of reading and ways of reading.
- Week 3: Types of picture books. Shared reading strategies and project-based learning.
- Week 4: Reading and integrated curriculum.
- Week 5: Exploring fairy tales.
- Week 6: DEAR time. Lapbooks as reading journals.
- Week 7: Graded reading.
- Week 8: Using poetry in the classroom.
- Week 9: Reading into drama.
- Week 10: Lapbook presentations – in the last class.

- Assessment methods
- 1. 80 % attendance and rapport (be on time).
2. Class prep: read all the assigned readings and complete weekly tasks for the class.
3. Maintain a worksheet portfolio (regular work on your worksheets). The worksheets are mainly for you as they record the class and your development in the area but also evidence your preparation and reflection. In case you are missing points the worksheets will be a proof of your work on the course.
4. Read at least one middle-grade book in English, options will be specified.
5. Present the book you read via a lapbook that you create. - Language of instruction
