Course objectives
Thanks to the completion of the course students understand the importance of media education for pupils of primary and secondary schools. The course is focused on the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the field of mass media for teaching media education in primary schools and secondary subject in the context of civic education, basic social sciences and other subjects.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to describe the basic types of media, to orientate in the ownership structure of the media on the Czech market and to understand the principles of media content creation. In addition, he should be able to critically analyze the content of the media and evaluate its relation to social reality.
Syllabus
  • 1) Course introduction, media education and media literacy 2) Disinformation, media and politics 3) Media education and cybersecurity, basics of online safety 4) Disinformation, hoaxes, misinformation, conspiracy theories: how to understand the concepts? 5) News reporting and information verification 6) Gamification and leaks in media education, using AI for creation 7) Manipulation and persuasion from a psychology perspective, why people believe conspiracy theories 8) AI tools for creating educational games for media education and AI threats 9) AI and freedom of speech versus disinformation and deepfakes 10) Propaganda and media 11) Critical thinking 12) Final seminar

Assessment methods
Students get a credit for continuous work in a seminar and a seminar preparation according to the current syllable. The syllable is available before the beginning of the semester in the organizational materials of the course in IS MU. Participation in the seminars is compulsory, there are possible two abstentions.
