Course objectives
The course provides a basic orientation to the psychological issues of people with chronic illness, people with disabilities, and people with certain types of mental illness. The course is broadly conceived, using a range of theoretical and practical disciplines, particularly medical (psychiatry, neurology and others) and is oriented towards special education, psychology, and possibly sociology, and aims to support people with difference and their application in life. The aim of the course is to teach students the basic concepts that can be used to characterize and describe psychological phenomena that develop outside the statistical norm, to understand the mechanism of development.
Learning outcomes
Student after completing the course: - Knows the psychological issues of different types of disabilities, handicaps and some of the most common mental illnesses - is able to work professionally in a multidisciplinary team including doctors, psychologists and other professionals - is familiar with the psychological characteristics of people with disabilities and can respond appropriately to them -know the background and circumstances for interpreting differences in a person's psychological functions, especially their possible implications in a social context.

  • 1. The subject and meaning of pathopsychology, pathopsychology in psychology, the development from the pathopsychological concept to the functional concept and otherness
  • 2. Norm and the concept of norm, the question of normality, disability, otherness, handicap, mental illness
  • 3. Trends and changes in terminology, mental health as a continuum, otherness as part of a continuum versus norm and pathology
  • 4. Quality of life for people with difference, experience, plasticity and layers of difference, starting points for an inclusive society and education
  • 5. Causes of mental illness, heritability of psychological traits and environmental influences, factors in the development of disability
  • 6. Mental disorders

Conditions for successful completion of the course

A) exam - pı́sem test

B) timely submission of two assignments - a research paper and a feedback paper (of your choice selected by you) on the work of a colleague

1. Research from current sources on one of the chosen topics The student will produce a text discussing current knowledge on a narrower issue within the topic, summarising findings from specialist sources, particularly research studies, naming current trends. The student chooses one of the predefined topics, logs in to the IS in the Topic Schedule for the course.

The text will be based on at least 3 current international sources. The sources will be published no more than 10 years ago and will be written in a language other than Czech, Slovak or Ukrainian. For searching articles and publications, I recommend quality peer-reviewed sources from established academic institutions. The text will be a minimum of 1 800 characters (symbols and spaces).

2. Feedback on peer research

We are looking for descriptive feedback and reflection on the quality of the research and the selection of sources. The text will be a minimum of 900 characters (symbols and spaces).
