Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive insight into the issue of education of pupils with specific learning disabilities. Within the course, students are introduced to the basic context of the assessment, counselling and intervention in the target group. Attention is paid to the process of education and its conditions in the context of lifelong learning.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: define terminology related to specific learning disorders; describe the manifestations of types of specific learning disorders and their influence on the student's educational proces; describe the influence of specific learning disabilities on individual personality development; be oriented in the education system of students with specific learning disabilities; define and describe the diagnostic tools used to detect weakened functions conditioning the development of specific learning disabilities; define pedagogical-psychological counseling services for students with specific learning disabilities; describe the services provided to students with specific learning disabilities by the school counseling center and cooperation in a multidisciplinary team at school;
Syllabus
  • Definition of specific learning disabilities (SLD) and their causes - basic concepts of SLD and etiology (from the domestic and international point of view). Risk factors of development of specific learning disabilities in preschool age - theory of Partial weakening of performance (Scharingerová, 1994)/Deficits of partial functions (Sindelar, 1996; Zelinkova, 2015). The context of school maturity and preparedness in relation to the emergence of specific learning disabilities. Diagnosis of weakened functions in preschool, younger school age, adolescence and adulthood. Specifics of the educational process (teaching methods, forms of teaching, assessment, etc.) and educational paths for pupils with specific learning disabilities. Characteristics of the basic actors of the educational process in the context of pupils with SLD (the role of the teacher, parents, classmates, the pupil himself). Specifics of socialization, emotional and psychological development of a pupil facing long-term failure. Services of pedagogical and psychological counselling in schools and beyond intended for pupils with SLD and cooperation in a multidisciplinary team.

Assessment methods
For successful completion following requirements are set: 1. Fullfil the semestral task given by teacher 2. Active participation on lectures and at least 80 % attendance 3. Exam - Written test. Student needs 70 % of correct answer to pass.
