- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to the theory of soap formation and its application to the technology of preparation and manufacturing, including the essential excipients necessary in these processes.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - describe the process of soap formation and the conditions necessary for it; - describe the properties of the substances required for the production of soap with a breakdown into the different groups and give examples of such substances; - prepare simple soap under laboratory conditions;
- Syllabus
- Lectures - Soaps. A brief history of soap making.
- - Types of soaps and an overview of their production methods. The difference between classic soap and syndettes.
- - Raw materials for the production of classic soaps (oils, bases, dyes, fragrances, various additives, stabilizing agents).
- - Chemical basis of soap formation. Structure of soap. Solid and liquid soaps.
- - Calculations in the manufacture of soaps. Soaping number and its significance.
- - Classic soap - cold process technology.
- - Classic soap - hot process technology.
- - Commercial ready-made soap bases and soap production from them.
- - Soap colouring, basic rules and procedures.
- - Soap additives and fragrances, basic rules and procedures.
- - Production of liquid and cream soaps.
- - Syndettes - nature, composition, formulation principles and production.
- - Packaging and storage, evaluation.
- Laboratory exercises (block teaching): - Preparation of simple soaps by cold and hot methods.
- - Preparation of soaps from commercial ready-made bases.
