- Course objectives
- Course description: Destructive and non-destructive methods of field archaeology (survey, excavation), their characteristics, usage and advantageous application based on the field situation, technical documentation.
- Syllabus
- 1. Field research in the Czech speaking countries and in Slovakia; a brief history and the development after WWII. Organization of archaeology in the Czech speaking countries and in Slovakia. 2. Archaeological feature in the field and in the collections. Specific methods of archaeological researches. Types of researches. 3. Ways of discovering new sites. Methods of prospecting – visual research, aerial photography and the usage of geophysics. 4. Types and characteristics of archaeological memorials, settlements, burial grounds, barrow grounds, deposits etc. 5. Layer, feature, grave, ditch, palisade and other units of archaeological monuments. 6. - 8. Destructive and non-destructive archaeological methods applied at archaeological sites; their strengths and weaknesses. 9. Principles of field research. Fundamentals of site documentation and surveying. 10. Procedures for selection of archaeological features. Main principles and methodology. 11. Research of skeleton and cremated burials and their documentation. 12. Research of settlements and their units. Principles of settlement and residential features researches. 13. Drawing and photographic documentation of settlement units. 14. Research documentation and its types. Uniformity of description, terminology and drawing expression. 15. Taking of soil and other samples. Conservation of a find directly at the site of discovery. Unearthing of a feature in situ. Use of chemical preparations in the field. Lakprofil. Practical part (training workshop): surveying and drawing of features in the field, levelling, total surveying of the site and tracing out a square network.
